Tips to Maintain Your Retractable Awnings
Retractable awnings from OZTECH are built to last – which is why they’re such a worthy investment for homeowners and businesses around New South Wales. That said, you can maximise their lifespan and keep them performing at their peak with some simple maintenance.
In this guide, we’re covering some tips to maintain your retractable awnings, with advice on what not to do.
Regular dusting and wiping
Our awnings are low maintenance, but we recommend some regular dusting and wiping to keep them looking their best. Around 2-4 times per year is enough (but more regular cleaning may be needed in coastal areas), and we recommend simply using tepid soapy water and a cloth to wipe off dirt and salt, which can reduce the life of the powder coating when they’re allowed to build up.
Don’t scrub the material; if you need to remove tough dirt, use a soft brush. Remove mess such as soil, bird droppings and exhaust from vehicles as soon as possible.
Checking for rust
During your regular cleaning, make sure to examine the coverings and frames for rust. Try to remove it quickly – even if only a small spot of rust is visible. This can easily build up and can obstruct the operation of your awnings.
Clearing branches and obstructions
Growing branches and other vegetation can damage the functionality of your awnings, so should be kept out of the way. Try to trim trees if they’re growing too close, and be aware that some plants release a chemical that actually damages the fabric of the awning if they get near it. Be careful in extreme weather conditions
Your awnings are the perfect weather solution when Sydney’s skies become too hot or too rainy. However, they should be retracted in extreme conditions such as harsh winds, snow, hail or storms. Try to be prepared, and roll up your awnings if this sort of weather is predicted.
Only roll up your awnings when dry. If they’ve been caught in a rainpour, roll out your covering and allow it to dry in the sun (as long as it’s safe to do so.)
Handle with care
By generally handling your retractable awnings with care, you can be confident it will go the distance. Avoid rough operation when rolling out and retracting the roof, as this can degrade its performance over time.
